Now this is a stretch. Fox News columnist Greg Gutfeld is looking for an explanation (or a funny scapegoat) for the very real increase in piracy in recent history. He outlines the crisis confronting the world’s waters:
"So each day, pirates hijack another ship. Today, it’s a Saudi supertanker with over $100 million worth in oil — a prize that’s pushed global oil prices up by a buck. Now I hear they’ve also grabbed a Danish ship, an attack that’s also driven up the price of Danish. So far, over 70 ships have been nailed this year, begging the question: Why pirating and why now?"
His answer? Johnny Depp!
"With his gorgeous hair, his gleaming muscles and his ample mascara, he’s made pirating a glorious occupation — one filled with delightful romance and wondrous cosmetics. He’s made pirating so palatable that I’ve even bought a parrot and started dating Heather Mills."
Gutfeld is kidding of course (we hope!) but he does have a good point that Jack Sparrow is so popular because our culture "finds evil far more interesting than those who fight it"–especially when evil is as fun and good looking as Captain Jack.

Tell us something we don’t know already Australia!
Australia’s Entertainment Television recently compiled a list of the 25 Sexiest Men alive, and surprising none of his fans, Johnny Depp was named the second sexiest man alive. Depp was eeked out by soccer stud David Beckham for the number one spot, but we will try not to hold that against them too much.
Australian Judge Samantha Brett had this to say about Johnny Depp’s sex appeal:
“Johnny Depp is a bona fide bad boy and women are addicted to guys who are a bit naughty. And every girl wants to be the girl to change the bad boy but of course that’s never going to happen.”
And to that we say–bad boys, yes! Changing Johhny? Never!

This image has been floating like MAD around the web today, and it appears to be newly unearthed concept art for the upcoming Tim Burton adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, in which Johnny will play the Mad Hatter.
CinemaBlend.com reports: "This is all based on some concept art unearthed by the Depp fansite Johnny-Depp.org . It looks like a photo but probably isn’t, given that the movie will be motion-captured animation. But the concept art is pretty detailed, and offers all kinds of mysteries to ponder. Why is he holding a rabbit? Why is his thumb bandaged? And if he’s this creepy as an actual human, think of how bizarre the motion-capture version will be."

I think he looks like a creepy cross between Edward Scissorhands and Willy Wonka!
The movie isn’t scheduled to come out until March of 2010, so this may be the closest thing we get to a real Johnny Mad Hatter shot for a while.

Russell Brand is in talks to play Captain Jack Sparrow’s brother in the next Pirates of the Caribbean film, it has been reported.
The comedian, who resigned from his BBC Radio 2 show last week over the obscene phone calls made to actor Andrew Sachs, could earn up to £5 million in the role.
He would not be the first tousled British star to appear alongside Johnny Depp in the film series; Rolling Stone Keith Richards had a brief cameo as Jack Sparrow’s father in Pirates of the Caribbean 3.
A source quoted in The Sun said the part was “perfectly suited” to Brand, who is known for his eccentric style.
“There’s a lot of Jack Sparrow in his mannerisms and behaviour. Depp’s accent isn’t a million miles away from Russell’s either,” the source said.
“Russell joining the Sparrows alongside Johnny and Keith Richards as their dad will complete the ultimate on-screen pirate family.”
Despite his problems in Britain, Brand has a growing profile in Hollywood.
Since making his US film debut earlier this year in romantic comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall, he has worked on a Disney film, Bedtime Stories, due for release at Christmas, and has a role alongside Dame Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons in a big screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
Asked after his resignation last week what he planned to do with his free time, Brand said: “Well, the show was only two hours long. I hope to go to America now and make quite a lot of films.”

Johnny Depp is taking his new role as the Mad Hatter literally - he has been caught eating his hat.
The Hollywood star portrays the famous character in director Tim Burton’s new version of Alice in Wonderland, and he has been amusing crewmembers on set with his strange behaviour.
Burton, who was worked with Depp on numerous film projects, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, says the actor is embracing his latest role.
He says, “Nobody plays oddballs better than Johnny and he’s loving playing this one. He actually ate his hat the other day. No word of a lie he just bit into the brim and chewed.”
